Cape Town vs the Winelands: where should you stay?

Cape Town and the Winelands are only about an hour apart, so many travellers ask whether they need to move hotels at all. Our short answer: yes, if you can. They're very different experiences. Here's why.

Staying in Cape Town

Choose the city if you want: beaches, restaurants within walking distance, easy access to Table Mountain, Robben Island and the Cape Peninsula.

Our favourite areas:

  • City Bowl & Tamboerskloof: leafy streets below Lion's Head, close to Kloof Street's cafés and bars.
  • Camps Bay & Clifton: beachfront glamour and sunsets, a short drive from town.
  • V&A Waterfront: convenient and secure, with harbour views and plenty of dining.
  • Constantia: a green, quieter alternative with its own historic wine estates.

Staying in the Winelands

Choose the Winelands if you want: slower days, long lunches, mountain views and wine tasting without watching the clock.

  • Franschhoek: a compact village with one main street of restaurants, ringed by mountains. Romantic and walkable.
  • Stellenbosch: a historic university town with more estates and a livelier feel.
  • The Helderberg & Somerset West: close to the airport, and perfect for a first or final night.

Why not just day-trip?

You can, and a private driver makes it easy. But staying overnight means:

  1. No rushing back for dinner in the city
  2. Sunset tastings and dinner at the estate
  3. A morning walk or ride through the vineyards before the day-trippers arrive

How we usually split it

4 nights Cape Town + 2 nights Winelands is our favourite combination for a first visit.

If you're heading on to a safari, finish in the Winelands. It's close to the airport and a lovely way to slow down before the bush.
