The best of South Africa: where to go on your first trip

Cape Town, the Winelands and a Big Five safari are the classic trio, but there's much more. Here's how we'd shape a first visit, and what to add if you have extra time.

The best of South Africa: where to go on your first trip

South Africa is the size of France, Germany and the UK combined. It has two oceans, seven climate zones and more variety than most travellers expect. That makes a first trip thrilling to plan, and easy to over-stuff. Here's how we think about it.

Start at the Cape

There's a reason almost every great South Africa itinerary begins in Cape Town. Table Mountain hangs over the city, the Atlantic beaches are a ten-minute drive from the centre, and the food scene punches far above its weight. Give it four or five nights. That's enough to wait out a windy day for the cableway and still drive the Cape Peninsula to Cape Point and the penguins at Boulders Beach.

Then go an hour inland to the Cape Winelands. Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are surrounded by mountains and vineyards, and staying two nights (rather than day-tripping) turns tastings into long lunches and lazy sunsets.

Add the safari

For most first-timers, the safari is the emotional heart of the trip. The simplest combination is a short flight from Cape Town to the Greater Kruger area, where private reserves like the Sabi Sand and Timbavati offer:

  • Off-road tracking with a ranger and tracker
  • A limit on the number of vehicles at each sighting
  • All-inclusive lodges, with two game drives a day

Three nights is the minimum; four is the sweet spot. Not sure which kind of safari suits you? Read our guide to Kruger vs private reserves.

If you have more time

With two weeks or more, consider adding one of these:

  • The Garden Route: a self-drive (or chauffeured) road trip along the south coast, with forests, lagoons and Plettenberg Bay's beaches. Finish with a malaria-free safari in the Eastern Cape.
  • Hermanus: between June and November, southern right whales come into Walker Bay to calve, often within metres of the cliffs.
  • The Drakensberg & KwaZulu-Natal: mountain hikes, San rock art, Zulu history and warm Indian Ocean beaches.
  • Johannesburg & the Panorama Route: the Apartheid Museum and Soweto, then the escarpment viewpoints of Blyde River Canyon on your way to Kruger.

A classic first-timer's shape

NightsWhereWhy
4–5Cape TownMountain, coast, food, history
2WinelandsSlow down, eat and drink well
3–4Greater KrugerThe Big Five, with expert guides
Optional 3–6Garden Route, Hermanus or KZNDepth and variety

Our golden rule: fewer places, longer stays. Two nights per stop is the minimum we recommend.
